The other day at clinical I was with a nurse who injured herself. She was removing the cover off a safety razor, and shaved two finger pads right off. She had to go to the ED for sutures and bandages.
Now, I was concerned before my OR rotation that I might get woozy and end up yakking breakfast onto my shoes, but it turned out it didn’t bug me at all. I’ve seen gross abscesses, nasty incisions, and encountered some headache-inducing odors. But thinking about scraping the ends of my fingers with a razor just gives me the willies.
I hear tell there are nurses who turn into a puddle if someone has to give them a shot. Some can’t wipe feces up without dry heaving. I wonder what the most common ick-inducing thing is for nurses?
Any thoughts?

For me, suctioning just grosses me out. I’ve been a nurse for 6 years and I NEVER get used to it. People can hack into tissues and show it to me with no problems, but start suctioning and my stomach just turns. YUCK!

I think John over at DisappearingJohn has that same issue (if memory serves).

Suctioning. I don’t know what it is about it, but the stuff that collects in there is just appalling. The worst is having to stare at the tank of suctioned gunk with crispies and unidentifiable detritus floating around. Also, I haven’t seen this yet, but I feel very certain I will vomit without preamble the first time I see a patient come in with a eyeball hanging out of their head. Eyes freak me out.

I hate vomiting without preamble. People arrive too late and miss the whole thing!
I guess I’ve tended to look past those buckets o’ gunk at the head of the bed. Eyeballs are a good one too.
I was able to locate what John said then said again here about lung butter.
I feel so smart now!

I have a hard time with the smell of puss (I know, I’m in trouble as I will be dealing with a lot of it!) and anything to do with an eyeball injury! Eyes freak me out too. I will probably faint if I ever see an object sticking out of someone’s eye!

Eyes, definitely.
What also really gets me is toothbrushing water. I donno why… but it is just gross.

Wow, good ones.
There are some crazy nasty pencil-through-eyeball pics that I saw when getting my EMT.
That floating scum from toothbrushing is pretty awful.
